Cunneyworth Hire Has Thorburn Excited

Chris Thorburn was over at Philips Arena this morning for the Children'sHealthcare Of Atlanta Rehab Summer Games (more on that later this week) andwhile he was there I asked him about Randy Cunneyworth, our new assistant coachwho just so happened to coach Thorburn for three years in Rochester. You cancount Thorburn among his fans and just one of many people who thoughtCunneyworth had a good shot at making the jump to the.nhl this year. Here's whatThorburn had to say about his former coach:"He taught me a lot. I was coming into pro hockey and I was pretty muchblinded by the game. I needed to learn a lot about myself and the game and hewas there for me giving me guidance. I think he's going to be great for ourteam. He knows the game, he's intense, and I think players are going to be ableto relate to him. He's really easy to talk to. I'm excited about having him downhere and I'm sure he'll bring the kind of success that he in had with theRochester Americans with him. He just has a way of getting through to theplayers and getting them to perform for him. He'll probably do the same thinghere. Guys will respect him. He's played at this level and he knows what ittakes to win."Eric Boulton actually played with and for Cunneyworth back in 1999-2000 inRochester. Boulton was a young player and Cunneyworth was a player/assistantcoach winding up his playing career. Boulton piled up 276 PIM that season- hissecond highest season total.On a side note, I've come to acquire a small collection of Score hockey cardsfrom the 1990 season (way back when there were 21 teams in the.nhl- and 16 of them made the playoffs!). Every week or so I'm given a new pack by someone here inthe office, and lo and behold, last Friday I got a Randy Cunneyworth HartfordWhalers card. Is it just me or did the Whalers have one of the best.nhl uniformsof all time? Great colors, and the logo had everything- a 'W' for the team, an'H' for the city, and a whale's tail. AwesomeIn other news, I'm glad to see wesigned Matt Siddall. Not many ninth round draft picks pan out but Siddall isin good company. Mark Streit went eight spots ahead of him in 2004 and ifSiddall ends up suiting up for the Thrashers he'll be the fifth player from theninth round of the 2004 draft to make it to the.nhl. You may or may not recallthat Siddall was one of my two workout partners (along with Myles Stoesz)went Iwent into the gym during prospect camp. He has decent size, loves to hit,and he's not a stranger to picking up some points. He's probably best suited tobeing an energy/checking line player and it's hard to project where those guysend up. When you're looking at an offensive player you can gauge whether he hasthe speed, vision and skill to do what he does at a higher level. Checkers, onthe other hand, can go awfully far based on hard work and the ability to becoached. Siddall will likely be competing for a spot in Chicago this fall wherehis personality and work ethic should endear him to Wolves fans.Source

Musings of Interest: Brandon Prust

I've obviously been targeting "question marks" in this musings series. With Boyd and Moss, it was a question of how and to what degree they will contribute next season. With Prust it's more a question of "why is this guy here at all?"After acquiring Jim Vandermeer near the trade dadline, Sutter admitted to inquiring about the rearguard while he was in Chicago earlier in the year. The Hawks asking price was a young tough guy - Brandon Prust. That apparently scuttled the deal.There's been a couple of eyebrow raisers for Flames fans this summer. Cammalleri, Tanguay and Bertuzzi come to mind. One that slid under the radar - and has made less and less sense as the off-season has progressed - was the re-signing of Brandon Prust to a one way contract. Now, we can safely infer based on this and the fact that he wouldn't move the kid for an establisheder (whom he also covetted) that Sutter likes Prust a lot. Still, this one-way thing doesn't make a lick of sense for a number of reasons: 1.) The prime reason - Prust hasn't done much to warrant it. Beyond gaining notoriety for shadowing a young Sidney Crosby during the Memorial cup several years ago, Prust has had a fairly unremarkable career. Since turning pro, he's averaged 30 points a season in the AHL. His PIM totals have been impressive (294, 211 and 248 consecutively) for those who care about that sort of thing, although many QC fans report that the bulk of those triple digit figures are made up of stupid, untimely penalties. The reviews from followers of baby Flames have been uniformly unimpressive. The young shit-disturber also had a cup o' coffee with the big boys in 06/07 where he managed just 1 shot and 25 PIM in 10 games. Again, not exactly noteworthy. 2.) The Flames roster is packed to the gills and in significant cap trouble. At the time of Prusts signing it kind of made sense because Roy wasn't a Flame and it looked like Marcus Nilson was going to go away. In addition, if there's depth that could be reasonably hidden in the AHL, it's Brandon Prust: he wouldn't be exposed to waivers by the call-up/send down process and isn't going to be much of an impact player on the Flames anyways. He's text-book "injury filler". It's true that Prust could still be sent back to the AHL without much of a hitch...beyond the nuisance of paying him 500k to play there. If Prust is inevitably sent down, it naturally begs the question "why did you sign an unproven kid on a more than full roster to that kind of contract in the first place?" 3.) It goes against established Sutter doctrine. Almost every prospect not named "Dion Phaneuf" that has made the Flames during his reign has had to fight his way onto the roster - Moss, Boyd and Giordano, though stand-outs on the farm, required a series of fortunate circumstances, from veteran incompetence to injury, to get a spot on the club. Hell, after making the team out of camp, out-playing a couple of vets during the season and proving himself fairly capable during a difficult play-off series, Mark Giordano was still served a contract marked by a "two-way" clause! Now, perhaps Sutter "learned" something from that experience and is loathe to potentially lose a guy he likes to Europe. I think, perhaps, that is the *only* way to explain this signing. The contract still doesn't make much sense in my mind because a.) Prust is eminently replaceable as a player and b.) Sutter went out and signed a similar guy (Roy) just a few weeks later anyways! I mean, if you think enough of a kid to give him the one-way, then why not give him a chance to prove himself on the ice before making him redundant! If the Flames were struggling to make the cap floor like the LA Kings of the world, I'd understand, but...Sigh. As for the player himself, while I think he wouldn't be a huge difference maker either way, I do kind of like what he potentially could be: a disruptive pest in the Ott/Avery/Burrows/Carcillo mold. When it comes to the PIM guys, I prefer pests over goons because they can typically skate, can disrupt the other team by getting them "off their game" and tend to draw as many - or more - penalties than they take. While Prust isn't a lumbering meathead, he's at least game enough to back-up any of his shenanigans. Here he is taking on Thrashers giant Boris Valabik, for example: Ballsy. With Roy (Primeau, Glencross, Boyd, Nilson and Nystrom) in town who knows if the kid will even get a chance to prove he can do it in the big leagues though. Hey!Lookwhat the Ducks are doing. I wonderwhere they got that idea? Actually, they openly admitted they got it fromus, but they're having trouble getting fans to send in pictures from placesother than Ducks games. Our fans, on the other hand, have been to all sevencontinents (including Antarctica) and have sent in pictures from the Great Wallof China to the Great Pyramid to Mach Picchu. At close to 300 pictures andcounting our Fans on the Road photo collection is pretty impressive, but we'restill looking for more. Going to Australia? We don't have any pictures from theGreat Barrier Reef or Ayers Rock. We're short on Amazon pictures (the river andthe rainforest), as well as shots from Greek ruins. Your pictures don't have tobe exotic though- just send in a photo of you with your Thrashers gear thatshows you on the road somewhere. Anywhere. Just try not to take it in a genericlooking restaurant or store in some generic town. We like original. And doesanyone know someone at NASA? I already think we have the most well-traveled fansin the league, but I'd be blown away if we got a legit picture of someone withThrashers gear in space. A Closer Look at the Central Division: Part 1

By: Bethany Bethany's Hockey Rants I have decided to pick apart all of the teams in the/nhl, before theseason starts. Give you my take on what they did, who they lost, whythey are better or worse. This will take some time, and you will haveto bear with me, all of them will be completed before the seasonstarts. And, I will try my best to not be bias towards one team oranother. Also, I want to make it clear, this is the team that finishedout the season…not before the trade deadline. First team up:Columbus Blue JacketsLOST:Ron Hainsey *UFA* Dick Tarnstrom *UFA* David Vyborny *UFA* Zenon Konopka *Trade* Nikolai Zherdev *Trade* Dan Fritsche *Trade* Joakim Lindstrom *Trade* Gilbert Brule *Trade*GAINED:Kristian Huselius *Signed UFA* Mike Commodore *Signed UFA* Fedor Tyutin *Trade* Christian Backman *Trade* Raffi Torres *Trade* RJ Umberger *Trade @ Draft* Mike York *UFA*Did the Blue Jackets improve? Most definitely. Are we going to winthe Stanley Cup this coming season? Probably not. The Jackets arestill lacking their number one center, but so are a lot of otherteams. The Blue Jackets top line, which will more likely looksomething like this:Nash-Umberger-HuseliusThat is a good line. That’s a scoring line. Nash hasimproved since Hitch has been in the organization, Umberger is probablythe most capable center we have, and Huselius is a proven goal scorer. What will it take for the Blue Jackets to becompetitive this season? Goaltending. Pazzy has to be perfect, and Idon’t think that will be a problem. He is a great goaltender, and ifhe can be the Pazzy from the beginning of the season, there shouldn’tbe a problem. Norrena had a tough season last year, and in my mind Ithink it had a lot to do with Pazzy getting the number one job. Norrena came in, and played in his first/nhl season, and came out withbeing the first goaltender in Blue Jackets history to have a betterthan .500 record, and I am sure it stung when Pazzy took over. Heshould be over that now, and be able to be a solid backup for Mr.Shutout himself. The goaltenders should also be improved with our newbulked up blue line.The forwards have improved also. Losing Zherdevsucked, and I am going to miss him, but Huselius has scored more pointsthan Z in the last two season. We have also added Raffi Torres, and RJUmberger, both are proven scorers.With a little chemistry, a little lack, and hopefullynot quite so many injuries, the Blue Jackets have a chance to maketheir first playoff appearance. Marty Reasoner and a Slacking Blogger

We have now entered the dreaded "hockey news dead zone" otherwise known as August. July is free agency month and it began with a bang and went out with a whimper. Lately your faithful blogger has allowed himself to become distracted by non topics like his faltering fantasy baseball teams, election year politics and touring Canadian bands visiting our fair city like (Wolf Parade had a hot show at Variety Playhouse this week).I have also been hard at work back testing a prediction model for the upcoming season. It is still a work in progress and I hope to cut down the error rate even more. If everything goes well I'll start a series of team previews beginning in mid-August. I never did get around to posting my breakdown of Marty Reasoner and since there is almost no Thrasher news, let's take a look at this roster addition.Marty Reasoner was a big time scorer in college hockey posting over a point per game in all three of his seasons with Boston College. His final year in college hockey he led the nation in scoring with an amazing 73 points (if you ignore Damon Moore of Fitchburg State and John Gurskis of St. Michael's that year--those schools have hockey programs?).The old saying is that "offense will get you to the show, but defense is what keeps you there" and that pretty much encapsulates Reasoner's career. Back when he was 22 Reasoner had an impressive season in terms of his scoring rate but he could not maintain that and he slipped badly thereafter. I think it is fair to say that as a scorer he has been a bit of a disappointment but he has re-invented himself as an excellent checker and penalty killer.Reasoner's transition from an offensive roster player to one with more of defensive side can is evident when you look at his special teams ice time. He began his career as a power play regular and a guy with very few PK shifts However at age 25 the Oilers started using him as regular member of their PK unit and last season he averaged over 3 minutes per game on the PK. A solid checking center who is very good short handed and decent at even strength. One of my biggest complaints about Thrasher management is that they grossly overpaid a 3rd line center (Holik) when similar players could be had for much less money. Reasoner is exactly the sort of "other player" I had in mind.Reasoner will be paid $1 million this coming season and for that one million the Thrashers will get someone who is superior on the PK to Holik. Last season Holik had an effective penalty kill rate of 78% when he was out there on the ice while Reasoner had an impressive 88% penalty kill rate. Now Reasoner might have been a bit lucky last season and he may not be able to sustain that this year, but he appears a solid bet to replace some of the PK minutes provided by Hossa, Holik and Dupuis last season. To look at it another way, when Reasoner was on the penalty kill his team's Short Handed Goals Against Average (SHGAA hereafter) was 4.49, while Holik's SHGAA was 7.63. On the other hand Holik does rate superior to Reasoner is even strength play where Holik's ESGAA was 3.01 was lower than Reasoner's was ESGAA 3.33.Bottom line? Reasoner is an adequate replacement for Holik as our 3rd line center and will be $3.25 million cheaper. Paying a reasonable price for a 3rd line center freed up money for the Thrashers to spend more money on defense where it was a bigger need.Source

NHL Schedule goes Back to the Future

by Bob HerpenThe Phanatic Magazine As promised, the has revamped its schedule matrix for the upcoming season and presented the league with greater opportunity for each team to play all other 29 clubs in the course of an 82-game schedule. For the Flyers, this means they will have only 24 as opposed to 32 division games – six each against the Rangers, Devils, Penguins and Islanders – three each at home and on the road. There will still be two home and two road games each against opponents from the Northeast and Southeast Divisions, but the new wrinkle is that they will face every team from the West at least once with three additional wild-card games against non-conference foes. Hmmm…hockey fans, doesn’t this sound very familiar? As in, this is the exact schedule breakdown the league used from the inclusion of Columbus and Minnesota in 2000 until 2004. In 2008-09, Philly heads to Denver on October 16, and home fans may get to see Peter Forsberg and Joe Sakic in one last go-round at the Wachovia Center when the Avalanche come here December 16. Vengeance goes to NoCal on October 16 and the Sharks invade these waters six days later, while former coach Terry Murray hosts the Flyers January 3 and brings his Kings in on February 25. So what gives? Why Colorado , San Jose and Los Angeles ? What logic could there have been to select those teams above all other better draws to get an extra game? I mean, here’s the club that pulled itself from dead last into the conference finals, and this is the best draw? Anyone reading this could have done a better job reaching into a hat with little slips of paper to pull out more favorable match-ups. For all the talk about the progressing, improving and setting trends for future success, it’s just another in a series of perplexing moves that it would alter its schedule under a format that came under fire before the fallout of the cancelled season. If you recall, the three-year plan created once the league returned in 2005 was one of the minor concessions commish Gary Bettman and the owners gave the players as compensation for the salary cap and salary rollback. ThePA went for it because player reps, particularly from the Western clubs, complained for years about energy-draining cross-continental road swings. That’s how the eight games against division foes and four against conference opponents reared its head – to limit travel within a manageable sphere. But suddenly, lack of travel isn’t good enough any more because certain teams are gypped of the gate from opposite conference opponents who might be a draw. Well, boo freakin’ hoo. Let’s not keep altering the slate every few years based on the whim of either players or owners. Just about the only good thing to come from the upcoming season’s schedule is the Winter Classic, coming to Chicago on January 1. The got everything right on this: keeping the game on New Year’s Day; an Original Six meeting between the Blackhawks and Red Wings; staged at Wrigley Field and in front of a national audience on a national network. That’s more than I can say for the All-Star Game, which is scheduled in Montreal for the first time since 1993. Inexplicably, it takes place on a Sunday evening – January 25 - which happens to once again exist smack in the middle of the NFL playoffs. It’s still to be broadcast on Versus - a basic cable network that struggled to get a million viewers for the exhibition last year. Back when the league was stretched just perfectly with 26 clubs in four divisions, each team played the other two, four, five, or six times. There was a guaranteed gate, home-and-road, for all opposite conference teams. The way things are set up now, there’s too much left to chance. Sure, the Capitals and Blackhawks are two clubs with exciting new players, but one game between the two isn’t enough. A double dip may happen by luck of the draw one year, but that’s not good enough. Likewise, larger or long-established markets should still have an inside track to the extra marquee contests. That means two games per year, no excuses, between Original Six clubs in different conferences. I don’t think Flyers fans would object to losing an extra home or road game against doormats Florida or Atlanta to create an extra meeting with the Red Wings, Stars or Avalanche. There are thousands of us out there who grew up staying up late over the holidays to watch games in Edmonton , or celebrated a little early on New Year’s Eve after a thrashing of the Canucks in Vancouver . Instead, for your viewing pleasure, you get a Colorado club that is a weak shell of former self Sakic, Forsberg or not. The Sharks are a weak-hearted club which actually made itself worse in the offseason. And the Kings just flat-out stink. Perhaps the best outcome of the change is that hockey fans in all 30 cities only have to wait three more years for the complaints to build up and another alteration is required.Source

Potential Trade Deadline Wackiness

The below post is for entertainment purposes only. It turns out my countingwas off, thus everything I wrote below is pretty much irrelevant. I'm leaving itup so you can openly mock me. I can take it. the actual trade deadline will fallon (if I got the math right this time) March 3 which features an evening game at home against the Panthers. So we could still be short a guy or two, but the drama won't be at the last minute.It's really, really early to be talking trade deadline, but it came upyesterday in some planning meetings for this season as we talked about keydates during the season. Last year the deadline fell on a Tuesday (Feb. 26) and the Thrashers hadbeen on the road for almost two weeks. Players left for a five-game roadtrip wondering if they'd be suiting up for the home team at Philips again.Marian Hossa pretty much knew at that point that he'd played his last homegame as a Thrasher. When the Thrashers hit the ice in Montreal four and ahalf hours after the deadline they did so without Hossa and Pascal Dupuisand without the players they'd beentraded for. Earlier in the day we hadcalled up Bryan Little, Colin Stuart and Joel Kwiatkowski in case theywere needed in such a scenario.Allthree of them suited up.Well, if you thought that scenario was a little odd, just wait until thisyear. The CBA states that the deadline is at 3pm on "the fortieth dayimmediately preceding the final day of the Regular Season" (Section 13.12(j)). By my calculations that puts it on March 8 this season at 3pm. guesswhat? We have a home game on March 8 at 3pm against Calgary. It's clearlytoo early to speculate over whether we'll be buyers or sellers at thedeadline, but odds are we'll be active as usual. So imagine this scenario-the players could be on the ice warming up wondering if they're playing ornot. A guy could get called over to the bench to be notified that he's justbeen dealt. Meanwhile there could be a handful of call-ups from Chicagowaiting to see if they were going to suit up. If four or five guys are onthe block there might not even be roster room to have enough call-ups onhand to replace them all should they all get dealt. What if we make a tradewith Calgary? Could the equipment guys get new nameplates stitched on thejerseys fast enough for them to play in that game? Would they have matchinggear? With the trade deadline falling on a Sunday we won't be the only team inthis scenario. There are at least four 3pm games on March 8 (a fifth is TBD)so we're sure to see some bizarre situations. Given that it takes time forthe.nhl to approve contracts it's entirely possible (and even likely) that adeal will be done a few minutes before 3pm but not approved or announceduntil the game is underway. The player would be scratched in that scenario,but can you imagine the anxiousness at Philips Arena as fans speculate aboutwho the scratched player just got traded for?It's still months and months away, but its a date to circle on yourcalendar.Source
